At the bottom of the dry stream bed, Bonard saw what he was looking for-a campfire flickering in the darkness 150 yards ahead. He pulled his wide-brimmed Stetson further down over his eyes to ward off the icy effects of the blue norther ' sweeping across the plains. This is the doggonest place to be Thanksgiving night, he thought to himself as he pulled his coat tighter around his throat against the wind-driven sleet. Bonard urged his horse toward the campfire, the paint trotted behind on the tether. As he got closer he recognized a familiar figure, wrapped in a blanket, hunched over the fire. Bonard stopped and dismounted ...

... Thanksgiving, The Old Fashioned Way The" tradition" is now in its fifth year. I would not have thought that such an early morning venture to my mother's house 30 minutes away on a cold, dark morning, would be so much fund that I didn't even have to mark it on the calendar as a reminder. The tradition, as I now think of it, started the first Thanksgiving after my father died, less than one month prior. I knew the first set of holidays would be difficult for my mother. I thought it would be the right thing to do-to drive to mom's early Thanksgiving morning to help her prepare the stuffing, prep the turkey, and put the bird in the oven. But mostly to keep her company in the now quiet house. Since we usually eat early afternoon, arriving at mom's by 6am meant getting up and out of my house by 5: 30am. First stop in my ...

... Change Your Thanksgiving Story Here is a story, that I heard many years ago. A young girl is watching her mother prepare a ham for Thanksgiving. Before she puts the ham into the pan, she cuts about six inches off of the end of it, and throws it away. The daughter asks the mother why she cuts the end off the ham. She replies; I'm not sure, but that is how my mother did it. So, knowing that all the family is gathered in one place, she approaches her grandmother. She asks her grandmother why she cut the end off the ham, before preparing it. Her grandmother replies; I'm not sure, but that was how my mother did it. In one final attempt, the young lady approaches her great grandmother. She asks why she cut the end of the ham, before cooking it. Her great grandmother replies; We only had one pan to cook with in ...

... " No, that's okay, I don't mind. Let me hold you while we get the door open" There was no way she'd get into the car, or, if she did, it would have been at the risk of falling if left to do it alone. All the while the driver just sat and watched with a very frustrated look upon her face. The old woman opened the car door and I helped her in. She sat and couldn't thank me enough. I told her not to mention it and that's what people are for. I even laughed to make her feel better and said," I'm used to this !" I am used to it, and I don't mind it. My fiance and I are getting quite accustomed to helping his dad's ill sister into the car and his father, too. It's just what you do. Well, it's what most people do. After the old woman was seated I tucked ...

The clattering of spoons to glasses grew, until Georgia and I rose to our feet and kissed tenderly. It was time for speeches. When it was my turn, I stood, turned, faced my new father-in-law, and raised my glass in the air." Tibor, thank you! I thank you for your courage. ... Thanks for listening! I have learned to expect gifts from God in the form of people. People who I meet for a few seconds, a few hours or even for a lifetime. My wife and I took a short train ride on an old historic train. It was part of her birthday plans. The one hour included lunch and for me high expectations. I expected to meet someone new who would be seated at our table. They wouldn't know it but God was sending them to me. He always sends me many gifts and at least one person. This would be my gift for today. Sure enough, we weren't seated two minutes, when I heard," Would you mind if I joined you ?" I replied," I was expecting you !" ... Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation~~~President Abraham Lincoln, October 3, 1863...." It is the duty of nations as well as men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God: to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations are blessed whose God is the Lord." We know that by His divine law, nations, like individuals, are subjected to punishments and chastisements in this world. May we not justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war, which now desolates the land, may be a punishment inflicted upon us for our presumptuous sins, to the needful end of our national reformation as a whole people?" We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these ...

If you had not known him or his story, you would not have realized that he had an injury that almost cost him his life. Back at TIRR, many patients are obliged to learn to deal and cope with dramatic changes after those life altering experiences. A person, often, is simply thankful for the small things-like being able to brush one's teeth, tying one's shoes, combing one's hair, etc. Quite often the small things in life are really huge. Often, it takes much time to deal with the many losses. However, with a positive attitude, support, as well as many other factors, life, after a spinal cord injury can be very successful. Diane quickly ripped the festive paper off her cereal-sized package and promptly pulled out a bright red coloring book with a goofy grinning elf on the cover." ... . After we bumped the tree ball up the stairs and negotiated the heavy weight of the root ball into the shiny tub, we filled the tub with water, just like a potted plant. Oblivious to the combination of moisture and electricity, we had our tree lighted in no time. Standing back, in the living room, now darkened except for the lights of the tree, was a breathless, magical moment. Tears rolled down my cheeks, as I thanked God, for giving me back my Christmas. We went a little wild, carefully placing every childhood token, every home-made gift, and every bauble and bead, that we had packed so long ago, only to be forgotten. But not this Christmas. Our little living tree became filled with a lifetime of love and sharing. Christmas came and went, all too fast. We carefully removed each ornament, the lights, and the garland. Tenderly, we moved our potted ...

... The possibility of our little grand daughter getting her tiny toesies caught in the spindles was a nightmarish thought. My mind flashbacked to the days when Katie, her mom, rode on the back of my pink and gray ten-speed. Has it really have been over 2 decades ago? I don't remember being so concerned when she was the one riding in back of me. As a grandma I now find myself worrying over everything, which probably comes with the territory. Thankfully there was a purpose for the vinyl sheeting I noticed lying next to the empty box. Following the instructions, we placed it between the back tire and frame and clamped it together with a few heavy duty plastic strip ties. Even though this vinyl covering causes an annoying sound, like a kid's bike with cards stuck in the spokes, nothing compares to the melody of hearing my darling grand baby girl oohing and aahhing while patting my back as we pedal through the park. My feet crunched through the ice newly frozen on the browned pasture grass. The night was chilly, but thankfully the air was calm. I inhaled the scent of the earth as it enveloped me, and gazed for a moment at the winter sky. It shone onyx black, hung with glistening stars and embellished with a near perfect moon. The atmosphere around me lay sleepily silent, as my pony did in the barn, anticipating my return. ... 17pm, our beautiful baby was born. At age 56, Kenny became a father and at almost 41 years old I became a mother. What a joy it was to hear his first cries and to know that he was healthy and alive! His name is also Kenny and he's a beautiful baby and other than having congenital cataracts and needing 5 eye surgeries, he is doing very well. I so look forward to celebrating Mother's Day this year and am so thankful for my little miracle. ... into our bedroom at night. I woke Dick, put on my robe and ran into my father's room. Dad lay in his bed, his face serene. But his spirit had left quietly sometime during the night. Two days later my shock and grief deepened when I discovered Cheyenne lying dead beside Dad's bed. I wrapped his still form in the rag rug he had slept on. As Dick and I buried him near a favorite fishing hole, I silently thanked the dog for the help he had given me in restoring Dad's peace of mind. The morning of Dad's funeral dawned overcast and dreary. This day looks like the way I feel, I thought, as I walked down the aisle to the pews reserved for family. I was surprised to see the many friends Dad and Cheyenne had made filling the church. The pastor began his eulogy. It was a tribute to both Dad and the dog who had changed his life. For ...

... " Bearly" Managing It was my first, and last, time I went camping. My boyfriend, his brother and I headed to a campsite at Lake Tahoe. We would be camping in a tent, on the ground, with no electricity. The only modern convenience would be the bathroom and shower facility at the campsite. Thank God for small favors. As we turned into the campsite we were met by the local ranger. He mentioned that the weather would be cold that night so be prepared. Make sure to clean up when we leave. And most importantly, keep the food locked up and away from the tents at night because there had been bear sightings the past several days. Bears? Did he say bears? I was not prepared for bears. Bears have claws. Bears have teeth. Bears eat people. Despite my objections we did not" turn around and high tail it out of there" We drove around ...

Two hours later, I squeezed my mother ’ s hand and fought back tears while the doctor began a monotoned discourse as to what we were to expect in the coming months and years. His words screamed in my mind: dementia, plaque, neurons, anxiety, assisted living, stage two, nursing care. When he finished, my mother stood, politely thanked the doctor and walked out. If nothing else, my mother was fiercely independent and she wouldn ’ t even consider the possibility that she had an incurable disease. She had overcome other misfortunes in her life, and this would be no different. But, as I walked behind her and saw her struggle to remember if she had worn a jacket or brought her purse, I knew this could not and would not be defeated no matter how much determination she had. ... , usually not thinking much of it. But on holidays even the place-settings conspire against me, rendering a silent rebuke against my single status. You can endure holiday dinners two ways if you're single: 1) Bring someone you don't particularly care for; 2) Hear the awful words" pull up an extra seat ," a euphemism for either a collapsible chair or one that is too high or too low for the table. Either strategy leaves you uncomfortable. At Thanksgiving two years ago, while my calves cramped from straddling the leg of my brother's dining room table, Aunt Nell took the opportunity to ask for details about my love life, which was seriously lacking at the time. The event was excruciating. Though I enjoy singlehood in the main, there have been times when I've worked myself into a mad frenzy looking for someone to fill a void I thought I couldn't satisfy on my own. Someone, anyone with a pulse would do. ...

The salesman motioned at the man, with his hand, in a backward motion, telling him move on down the street. Several more times I tried to dial the number but it was continually busy. “ Like a cup of coffee ?” the salesman asked me. “ That sounds great. Thanks ” As he and I stood talking the front door opened and a young man about twenty came into the store pushing his self in a wheelchair. The salesman sat down his coffee cup and walked toward the young man. “ I need a new pair of shoes ,” said the customer. As he turned the corner there was a blanket across his lap. I was shocked to see that the young man had no legs. The salesman stood there having no idea what he should ...

... Gifts From God I was just sitting down after a fantastic dinner that my wife had made today. I was feeling warm, content, and very thankful to God for my loving family and for my wife's delicious cooking. I was feeling blessed to have been given so much to enjoy, rejoice in, and share in my life. I doubted that there was anything that could make me feel better than I did at that moment. It was just then, however, that my wonderful daughter yelled for me and my wife to hurry outside right away and see the sky. It had been raining all day long, but now the setting sun was making the breaking clouds in the western sky turn a glorious, shining yellow. That was not all, though. At the same time God was using that beautiful setting sun to create the most fantastic double rainbow that I had ever seen. It covered the whole eastern part of the sky ...

... of time" when a carpenter, some smelly shepherds, and an exhausted, young mother stood in silent awe at the sight of the infant in the manger. Eternal instants. You've had them. We all have. Sharing a porch swing on a summer evening with your grandchild. Seeing her face in the glow of the candle. Putting your arm into your husband's as you stroll through the golden leaves and breathe the brisk autumn air. Listening to your six-year-old thank God for everything from goldfish to Grandma. Such moments are necessary because they remind us that everything is okay. The King is still on the throne and life is still worth living. Eternal instants remind us that love is still the greatest possession and the future is nothing to fear. The next time an instant in your life begins to be eternal, let it. Then it occurred to me: God wants us to sing from our very heart and soul. It never matters what we sound like. And praising God is not always with a song, but when we are persecuted, we give God praise with our words of thanks. So I answered," Though I could not physically sing, I would still praise Your Name" And the Lord asked," Do you really love Me ?" With courage and a strong conviction, I answered boldly," Yes Lord! Yes, he is a born blind. Thank God he was able to hear the sound. He shook my hand with a mile-long grin and said," So long trucker, I'll catch you again" I hit that interstate with tears in my eyes. I turned on my radio and got another surprise." Breaker 1-9 ," came a voice on the air," just one word of thanks from Mom Teddy Bear. We wish each and every one a special prayer for you, 'cause you just made my little boy's dream come true" I'll sign off now before I start to cry." ... the maiden peeled away the tattered, old shell which encased her winged friends body, to reveal beautiful wings of emerald green, a small pink heart on each side. Both tears and joy filled the maiden's heart, and her story was thus passed down by the old fishermen sitting down by the sea. Real life application: Aren't we all guilty to some degree of searching for or desiring something that, in most cases, is right under our very noses? Thankfully, unlike the above fictional story, love is not elusive at all, and in fact, it is all around us, if we would only fearlessly trust, not only God, but the power of love. ... window air conditioner facing the lot. I was out of the sun, but far from cool. The only other time I was ever in a funeral home by myself was when my Gramps died. The director always let me arrive early so I could spend some private time with him. I loved my Gramps so much. This time, however, I didn't even know the man and I was about to participate in his funeral. A man walked in and thanked me for being there." We have him ready. There will be no viewing, of course. We will hold a simple ceremony at the grave site ," he said. When the others arrived we all followed the hearse a few miles down the road to the cemetery. Upon entering, the driver slowed down for a moment just outside the chapel." Good, at least he will have a church service ," I thought to myself. Suddenly the cars in front of ...

... Spelling Lessons “ That was really stupid ” I said out loud as I was reading over something I had written down incorrectly. “ We don ’ t say that word, Mom ,” my son, Jeremy, quickly informed me as his little daughter was playing on the floor with her dollhouse. That was really obtuse ” I quickly rephrased my words as I dredged up a vocabulary word from my high school days. “ Thanks, Mom, now she ’ s going to be telling people that they are O-B-T-U-S-E ”, he spelled. “ S-O-R-R-Y ” I mischievously spelled back to him and then thought better of it because that is probably one word that doesn ’ t get used enough anymore. Jeremy seems to have taken a sudden interest in spelling lately. For example, I hear him saying such things as: “ I H-A-T-E it when that happens ”, “ In this game you have to K-I-L-L the monsters with lasers ” and “ This D-U-M-B ...

... 3, which is not good (one major organ plus everywhere ), so I wound up doing 8 months of chemo. Lost the hair-the whole bit. I missed a lot of work. When I felt good enough, I would go to Sarvey and take Freedom out for walks. Freedom would also come to me in my dreams and help me fight the cancer. This happened time and time again. Fast forward to November 2000, the day after Thanksgiving, I went in for my last checkup. I was told that if the cancer was not all gone after 8 rounds of chemo, then my last option was a stem cell transplant. Anyway, they did the tests; and I had to come back Monday for the results. I went in Monday, and I was told that all the cancer was gone. So the first thing I did was get up to Sarvey and take the big girl out for a walk. ...

... learn ?" The son answered," I saw that we have a dog at home, and they have four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden; they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lamps in the garden; they have the stars. Our patio reaches to the front yard; they have a whole horizon" When the little boy was finished, his father was speechless. His son added," Thanks, Dad, for showing me how 'poor ' we are !" Isn't it true that it all depends on the way you look at things? If you have love, friends, family, health, good humor and a positive attitude towards life-you've got everything! You can't buy any of these things. You may have all the material possessions you can imagine, provisions for the future, etc; but if you are poor of spirit, you have nothing! Addendum- ...

... indication. I looked down at the chair and noticed that the clamps holding the electronic keyboard and chair controls had apparently loosened causing the equipment to slip down, out of his reach." Is this the problem ?" I said, as I pulled it back into place, hoping I wasn't doing more damage than good. I then re-tightened the clamps. His hand jerked over to the keyboard and he hit a single key. An electronic voice told me," Thank-you" He then found the toggle control that steered the chair, turned and left. I got back in my car and headed off to work, completely forgetting my newspaper. As I drove, I felt a gratitude come over me like I had never felt before! I was truly blessed to have the physical abilities that allow me to live a normal life. Here was this young man who relied on a mechanical chair to get him around and a voice simulator to communicate. ...

... most of the time. Except when he made a wise crack. He always managed to steal a glance looking up to see how you reacted to his comments. I believe he enjoyed doing that to people. Still kneeling by his wheel chair, I felt comfortable there. There was an awkward silence as we both waited for the other to continue the conversation. I waited because I wasn't sure he wanted to talk." Nice sneakers ," he said." Thanks, no one ever complimented me on my sneakers before ," I said." No one has the view of the world I do ," he replied. I laughed this time." So, tell me about the world as you see it ," I said." Well, I can tell if someone is comfortable speaking with me or not. Most people can see it in another's eyes. I see it in their feet ," he said." How can you tell by ...

... walk at your own pace and delight in all the natural beauty that surrounds you. It is the perfect place to get back in touch with God and to fill your soul with joy. The only problem is that with the path being so near the water, erosion sometimes causes holes to develop along the walkway. It was while we were walking along it the other day that one of these holes caught my oldest boy unawares. He stumbled and almost fell but thankfully was able to reach out and take my hand. I steadied him and we walked on for awhile holding hands and feeling connected in our love for each other. I think that sometimes the troubles we face in our journey through life are a lot like those holes in the ground. They are always there causing us to stumble and sometimes even to fall. It is good to know, however, that we can always reach out and take the hand of our Heavenly Father. ...
